UT Pushes for More Advocates

UT AdvocatesJoe DiPietro, president of the University of Tennessee, knows it’s expected that he or a UT lobbyist will walk into the office of a legislator and advocate for the university. But when alumni and other constituents show up, their presence adds another level of credibility and influence, DiPietro said.

To increase that influence, the system aims to widen its network of advocates.

UT’s plan to fix the “broken” university-funding model requires a culture change in how people think of higher education, said Carey Whitworth, director of advocacy for the UT system.

“Our advocates are a great place to start that change,” she said.
