Legislation to create teacher remediation programs will be considered next week in the Senate Education Committee and the House Education Administration & Planning Subcommittee.

SB1629/HB1629 by Sen. Dolores Gresham (R-Somerville) and Rep. Eddie Smith (R-Knoxville) would require public higher education institutions to offer remedial coursework if the first-year graduate of a teacher preparation program scores a level one or level two (the lowest categories possible) on the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) if the director recommends it.

While this legislation is only for public higher education institutions, there may be amendatory efforts to include all higher education institutions with teacher preparation programs in the legislation. The University’s Government Relations staff is currently working with the sponsor on this legislation.
