UT Government Relations Team Seeking Legislative Intern for 2026 Spring Semester

Intern application

The University of Tennessee Division of Government Relations, Advocacy & Economic Development is seeking a legislative intern for the 2026 spring semester (January-May). This is an opportunity for a graduate or undergraduate UT student with an interest in the intersection of higher education policy and politics to gain unique experience in both federal and state government relations and higher education public policy. Academic credit (between 3 and 15 hours) is available.

The University of Tennessee Division of Government Relations, Advocacy & Economic Development (GRAED) serves as the voice of the entire University of Tennessee System before state and federal governments. Our work advances UT’s missions of education, research, and outreach by strengthening relationships with policymakers, shaping public policy, and supporting initiatives that drive economic growth. The internship will be based in Nashville, TN, working directly with the Executive Director of Partnerships and Regulatory Affairs.

Responsibilities: The intern will directly support the GRAED team. Duties include policy research, conducting legislative analysis, tracking legislation and preparing updates on issues, assisting with office communications, and attending meetings, hearings, and briefings on higher education issues before the Tennessee General Assembly and Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The intern will also support activities to advance the University’s interests within both the state and federal government.

Qualifications: Current UT undergraduate (Junior or Senior) or graduate student pursuing a degree in education, political science, public policy, journalism, or related field. Must possess an interest in policy issues affecting higher education. Strong research, writing and communication skills and a demonstrated interest in public policy, higher education, or economic development is required. Those with the ability to work independently and manage multiple assignment in a fast-paced environment will excel in this role.

Compensation: Compensation will be competitive with other legislative internships—$400 per week (up to $8,000) for the duration of the internship. A one-time advance payment of $400 will also be available for relocation purposes. Mileage reimbursement for one trip to campus each month will also be available.

How to apply: Interested applicants should submit a resume and brief statement (1-2 paragraphs) describing your interest in higher education policy and government relations to: Josh.Warren@tennessee.edu

Applications can be submitted until October 24.
